Tobacco Facts

Cigarettes

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States.

Cigars

Most cigars are composed primarily of a single type of tobacco (air-cured and fermented tobacco), and they have a tobacco wrapper. They can contain between 1 gram and 20 grams of tobacco. Cigars vary in size and shape. Three sizes are sold in the United States.

Hookah

Also known as shisha, nargile, arghile, goza, water-pipe, or hubble bubble.

A hookah is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco through cooled water. The tobacco is heated in a bowl at the top of the hookah and the smoke passes through water in the base of the hookah.

Spit Tobacco

Also known as dip, snuff, chew or chewing tobacco. Chewing tobacco and snuff contain 28 carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). The nicotine content in a can of dip or snuff is approximately 144 milligrams, which is equal to about 80 cigarettes.

Loose Tobacco - Roll Your Own

Roll your own (RYO) refers to a cigarette made from loose tobacco and rolling papers. Roll-your-own products are sold as a pouch of tobacco for rolling hand-rolled cigarettes, sometimes with the rolling papers provided in the pouch. Loose filters can also be bought and added to the rolled cigarettes.

Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes (a.k.a. e-cigarettes or e-cigs) are battery-operated devices designed to look like and to be used in the same manner as conventional cigarettes. E-cigarettes claim to be a safe alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. The truth is there is no evidence to back up that claim.

Dissolvable Tobacco

Orbs, Sticks, Strips and Lozenges

As the social stigma of smoking and U.S. bans on smoking in public grow, tobacco companies are feeling forced to think creatively about new nicotine delivery systems, like Camel Orbs, for future sales growth as demand for cigarettes continue to decline.

Bidis and Kreteks (a.k.a. clove cigarettes)

Bidis (or "beedies") are small, flavored, filterless Indian cigarettes. Bidis are tobacco, hand-rolled in a tendu or temburi leaf (plants native to Asia), and tied with colorful strings on the ends.
